| The
Hannahville Poets, is a joint effort between Nah Tah Wahsh/Hannahville
Indian School students and myself, Nah Tah Wahsh high school
English teacher, showcasing student work from the past 10 years.
The writing emphasizes the
students feelings about growing up in both the red and white
worlds and the importance of elders and traditional teachings. I
compiled, edited and typeset the book, working with student
editors. The book was then printed locally and published by the
Hannahville Potawatomi tribe.
Our intent was to show the
maturing thoughts of Indian high school students; to provide a
vehicle demonstrating reading and writing skills (other than
standardized tests); and to show the tribal and global
communities the joy -- and pain -- that fill the world of
today's indigenous student.
The writings were produced and collected
over the past 10 years, a generation. Topics included native pride,
ceremonies, traditional teachings, family, childhood, and death. Student
artwork and photographs were included. (All writing was submitted to
turnitin.com, a plagiarism website, and all artwork was signed off by
the student or their parent to ensure authenticity and publishing
rights.) |
