Math Mosaic Mural Project

A cooperative project among students in the gifted and talented program, art, mathematics and physical science classes is producing a mosaic tile wall design in the mathematics room of the high school.  Each design on the wall relates to mathematics in some way, and many of the designs also relate to cultural topics, such as beadwork patterns and the medicine wheel.

The wall has about 40,000 tiles applied when it is finished (that sounds like a math problem).  Most students from the middle school and high school have already taken part in the project.

The objectives of the project are to:

  • create original drawings, geometric patterns, and designs

  • associate mathematics with cultural activities

  • create a scale for reproduction

  • learn application of ceramic tiles.
