Larissa Wandahsega was awarded the National Indian Student
of the Year award at the National Partnership Conference of the Bureau of
Indian Education (BIE) in Denver, Colorado. The award was presented by
Carmen Taylor, Executive Director of the National Indian School Board
Association.
Larissa was chosen from eligible students in more than 180 schools of the
Bureau of Indian Education.
Larissa is a junior and the daughter of Janel and Jason Feathers of Bark
River Township. She is an honor student with a grade point average (GPA) of
3.5. Her favorite subjects are English and mathematics. Her main interests
are writing stories and poetry.Larissa has been on the varsity volleyball
team since seventh grade, is on student council, has won art awards, and is
on the Hannahville Indian Community Youth Advisory Council. She has also
participated in Project Close-Up in Washington D.C.
Larissa returned on August 1st after a 20-day tour of Europe as part of
the People to People Student Ambassador Program. According to
Hannahville Elementary School principal, Rose Potvin, these programs provide
international educational opportunities for students, combining hands-on
cultural experiences with behind-the-scenes access to fascinating people and
places. The program also provides opportunities for amazing outdoor
adventures to create life-changing educational experiences.

Larissa was not able to attend the Denver conference because
of her stay in Europe. The award was accepted by her aunt, Geneva Wandahsega,
who is the Hannahville Indian School Board chairperson.
Other school board members attending were Donna Boda, Sharon Philemon and
Marilyn Shawano. Superintendent Tom Miller and elementary principal Rose
Potvin were also present. |
