The Nah Tah Wahsh Virtual Museum is intended
to be a learning experience for our students and community that we are sharing
with the global community. We would welcome input from people who are knowledgeable
about the Great Lakes Native Americans and would enjoy visiting and documenting
items in museums that have exhibits related to this subject. Please email
us if you would like to help.
This project started
with our school's participation in the creation of the NMAI
Virtual Tour, an opportunity provided for us as members of the 4Directions
Challenge Grant. Our two day visit to the National Museum of the American Indian
sparked a fire that has traveled throughout our elementary and middle school
classrooms.
We had been struggling to get students involved in
our Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
grant, "Project: History on the Web." While observing our
students as
they created QTVR movies of artifacts and researched them, we realized
that a virtual museum would be the ideal way to get student and community
participation in the grant. As a result, we have committed to visiting and photo
shooting one museum a year. We will also be organizing class projects
that involve the photography and documentation of private collections in the
area.
In addition to providing an online resource about
Great Lakes Native Americans, we will share information about how the
museum projects are done and suggestions we came up with to improve
upcoming excursions.
