This is a woven black ash basket. The basket contains tobacco and a number of herbs. The contents were used for a variety of things, including healing and making teas. Tobacco was not only smoked by the Native people, but was also used as offerings when praying. This basket with its contents can be seen in Fort de Buade's Santiego Lodge exhibit. Santiego was a very respected person among the people in the Straits of Mackinac area. Click on the movie and "pull" the cursor down to see the contents of the basket. |
