The French and British trade industry dramatically changed Native American living styles and, ultimately, caused great hardship on them as the game numbers were depleted. Over the years, traditional ways of hunting and survival were forgotten, and many came to depend on the whites for their livelihood.

The charts below are intended to give our visitors examples of trading rate. As with today's trading practices, the rates varied, based upon supply and demand. 

The chart on the left shows the number of beaver skins traded for various items with white traders in the mid-1600's. The chart on the right shows how traders based value on other skins and animals for trading purposes.
