These
are actually moccasins that have the ‘leggings’ attached.
The foot is the traditional Woodland puckered toe with a
traditional floral design. The design on the foot was sewn onto
fabric first and then the fabric was stitched to the leather.
The legging part
of the moccasin is also cloth. The work on the legging is called
appliqué and appears to be in the style of Seminole work.
Attached to the legging is a band of fur and more fabric that
has been stitched with a floral design. The tassels are for
pulling the band around the knee tightly so that would not fall
down.
These are very
eloquent moccasins, perhaps part of a bride's wedding outfit.
The
moccasins do appear to have much wear and tear to them, so it's
hard to tell how old they are.
