Eagle Feather Headdress

Eagle feathers are high respected by Native people. The eagle is believed to carry prayers from Earth to the Creator. We are taught that eagle feathers come to us from the eagle. Feathers can be presented to an individual from others who believe that the individual has “earned” that feather. This means that the person receiving the feather has accomplished something in his or her life or has made a contribution of importance to their people, family, friends, or community.

The feathers on this headdress have been wrapped with red yarn and attached to the cap individually. The majority of the feathers have been attached at the crown. The cap has been woven out of cloth or yarn. The beaded band appears to have been done on a loom and then attached.

It is hard to tell the age of this headdress. The feathers appear to be old, however, this is not necessarily an indication of age for the headdress. Sometimes feathers used are much older than the item that has been constructed.
