This type of basket was used for storage. If the basket was sealed with pine pitch to make it water tight, it could also be used for cooking. Native Americans used such baskets to cook in before they began to trade with the Europeans for metal cooking pots. Rocks would be heated in a fire and then dropped into a basket that had been filled with water, meat, herb, and vegetables. As the rocks cooled, they were taken from the basket and replaced with other hot rocks.Kathy McNeely, June 2000 |
