Beaded Rifle Sheath

After the Native Americans began to trade for weapons, guns, (rifles), they also began making coverings to protect them.

This rifle sheath is made from leather and has been beaded. It is a traditional Woodlands floral design. The Woodlands people used what they saw around them as designs for their work, flowers, animals, birds, and trees.

The owner of the Fort de Buade Museum does not who or where the rifle sheath came from or how old it is. It has been estimated that it is from the middle to late 1800’s, possibly early 1900’s. The style used is one that would cover a “repeating” rifle. By today styles, the design of a 30/30 caliber rifle.
