Beaded and Quilled Moccasins

Beaded and Quilled Moccasins

These are not Woodland style moccasins. This particular style was and still is worn by the plains people.

This pair has been decorated with dyed porcupine quills and beads. Both are stitched directly onto the leather. The quillwork here is known as “flat” work. The porcupine quills are flattened before they are used. Each quill is put onto the leather individually. Flat quillwork was also used on shirts, dresses, and leggings. This work is still being done today.
