Birch Basket

Birch Bark BasketThis birch basket is one of several types used in the Great Lakes area. It is 10" wide and 15½" long at the top and 10" deep.

The basket was cut and formed into shape and then laced with sinew. The top of the basket has been wrapped with a strip of base wood and laced with sinew. This kept the bark from splitting into layers.

The design was created by cutting the design into the bark and then placing it the sun. The sun darkened the areas where the design has been cut.

This basket was used for storing different items. In some cases this style of basket may have also been sealed with pine pitch.
